
Rita Moreno receives Lifetime Achievement Award from Screen Actors Guild
Congratulations go to Rita Moreno for recently being recognized with a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Screen Actors Guild. Moreno is best-known for her performance in Westside Story, an experience she described in an appearance at the Adelante Movement’s session during the 2013 Hispanicize conference (pictured here). I have to admit that I’ve never actually seen Westside Story, but I found her recollections interesting and poignant.
According to Wikipedia, Moreno is “the only Hispanic and one of the few performers to have won all four major annual American entertainment awards, which include an Oscar, an Emmy, a Grammy and a Tony, and was the second Puerto Rican to win an Academy Award.” More important, she was the “first Hispanic to win an Emmy (1977), a Grammy (1972), an Oscar (1962) and a Tony (1975).” Very impressive.
