A crowd of people at an outdoor event in bright sunlight, their skin glistening with sweat. A man in the foreground wearing sunglasses and a sleeveless shirt holds a clear plastic cup and adjusts his glasses, while others around him shield their faces and drink cold beverages. How Hot Is Too Hot? Houston’s New Tool Tracks Heat and Health Warnings

H-town, Health & Fitness, In the News & Around the Web

Houston, we have a problem… it’s HOT. Like, “eggs-on-the-sidewalk” kind of hot.

This week, Houston’s forecast is heating up in a big way. And if you’re feeling it, so is your body. That’s why the Houston Health Department just launched something brand new: the Houston Summer Surveillance Dashboard—a tool that tracks how this extreme heat is affecting our health right here in Houston, Texas.

What Is It?

Think of the dashboard as Houston’s own heat-health detective. It gathers real-time data on how many people are visiting emergency rooms with heat-related illnesses (HRIs), like heat exhaustion and heat stroke. You can even see which neighborhoods are the most affected, what time of day gets the most cases, and which age groups are feeling it the hardest.

Why It Matters

Since April, over 1,600 people in our area have gone to the ER because of the heat. That’s not counting folks who just stayed home and felt terrible. The dashboard helps city leaders know where to open cooling centers and how to keep us all safe. It even tracks things like:

  • Heat-related pregnancy risks
  • Kidney and heart problems made worse by high temps
  • Emergency visits by race, age, or location

Pretty cool, right? (Pun intended.)

Coming Soon: Heat Alerts!

The Health Department is also working on a new heat alert system. So when it’s blazing hot outside, you’ll get a heads-up to stay indoors, drink water, and check on your abuelita.

Here’s the Forecast for Houston This Week

  • Wednesday, August 13, 2025: High of 94°F, Low of 78°F
  • Thursday, August 14, 2025: High of 95°F, Low of 78°F
  • Friday, August 15, 2025: High of 95°F, Low of 80°F
  • Saturday, August 16, 2025: High of 97°F, Low of 79°F
  • Sunday, August 17, 2025: High of 99°F, Low of 77°F
  • Monday, August 18, 2025: High of 100°F, Low of 78°F

Yeah… it’s going to be a scorcher.

What You Can Do

  • Hydrate like your life depends on it—because it does.
  • Skip the outdoor chores during peak heat hours (2–5 PM).
  • Check on your vecinos, especially older adults and anyone without AC.
  • Wear light clothing (yes, even if it means ditching the black tee for once).

Want to see how your neighborhood is doing? Or track trends in heat-related health visits over time? You can do that now: Houston Summer Surveillance Dashboard
