Houston’s Hispanic-Serving Institutions, options for higher learning
Sixty percent of Latino college students attended a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) in the 2014-2015 academic year, according to a recent survey released by Excelencia in Education.
What is a Hispanic-Serving Institution? According to Wikipedia, an HSI “an institution participating in a federal program designed to assist colleges or universities in the United States that attempt to assist first generation, majority low income Hispanic students.” An HSI must have Hispanic students be at least 25% of its full-time undergraduate student population.
There are more than 250 schools that have been designated as an HSI. In the Houston are we have the following (according to the Hispanic Association of Colleges & Universities):
- Galveston College
- Houston Community College System
- Lone Star College System
- University of Houston
- University of Houston-Clear Lake
- University of Houston-Downtown
- University of Houston-Victoria
I attended the University of Houston. Which college did you attend?
