Today’s college student has never done these things

Arts & Entertainment, General

Every year Beloit College provides their college faculty and staff with a list to provide a cultural context on the incoming freshman class. It’s a simple list that includes things they never have done, or things that have always been “true” for them. The intent is to give their faculty and staff a better understanding of the new students.

Of course, the rest of us read the list in amazement because it’s a concise and accurate look at just how much things have changed in the world. A few of the things that caught my eye this year:

They are the last class to be born in the 1900s, the last of the Millennials —  enter next year, on cue, Generation Z! Yes, you read that correctly. This is the last class of Millennials coming into colleges and moving towards adulthood.

eHarmony has always been an option for a relationship and Amazon has always been a shopping option. According to Wikipedia, eHarmony was launched on August 22, 2000 and Amazon was launched on July 5, 1994.

The Latin music industry has always had its own Grammy Awards. In fact, the first one was held on September 13, 2000.

My absolute favorite: “As toddlers, they may have taught their grandparents how to Skype.”

Read the entire 2021 List. It’s enlightening.
