NPR is reporting that Pitbull has opened a charter school in Miami for students in grades six through 12. The school is called the Sports Leadership and Management Academy (SLAM). Its Mission & Vision is:

Sports Leadership and Management Charter Middle/High School’s mission is to provide an innovative, in-depth educational program preparing students for secondary studies and beyond through an emphasis of sports-related career preparation.

The school philosophy is the mechanism through which the mission will be achieved. In order to produce college bound and career-oriented graduates, the school believes it must provide Rigor, Relevance, and Relationships in the educational program.

I’ll be honest that I’m not a big fan of Pitbull, though I enjoy some of his songs when they rotate onto my Pandora stations, but it’s good to hear that an entertainer is doing something more than making money. The cynics would say that he’s doing it for the press, and that may be the case. But he could actually just do nothing and it wouldn’t hurt his image at all.

A year from now we’ll see how the school fared and judge based on that.
