Houston Latinx Artists Summon Their Alebrije Dreams for MFAH Festival

Arts & Entertainment

Six talented Latinx artists from our great city have been selected to create magical alebrije sculptures for the upcoming “Dream with Alebrijes Festival 2023” this November! This special event is a collaboration between the nonprofit arts group Advocates of a Latino Museum of Cultural and Visual Arts & Archive Complex in Houston, Harris County (ALMAAHH ), and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston (MFAH). The artists’ vibrant alebrije creations will be displayed on the museum’s campus during their Fall Festival on Sunday, November 5, 2023.

For those unfamiliar, alebrijes are imaginary and mystical Mexican folk art sculptures of animals, originally dreamed up by the artist Pedro Linares in 1936. Today, they are a celebrated part of Mexico’s Day of the Dead festivities.

Each of the six Houston artists will take inspiration from Linares’ alebrijes to design their own unique sculptures. Get ready for a menagerie of magical creatures!

The lineup of talented artists includes:

  • Krystle Holnes will be fusing mermaid and tree shapes with Afro-Panamanian patterns
  • Laura de León, inspired by the protective jaguar spirit of Mesoamerica
  • Michelle Matamoros will be combining raccoon, bumblebee, and butterfly motifs
  • Hugo Pérez will be spotlighting the issue of homeless dogs in Houston
  • Rebo celebrates the clever opossum who brought fire to humanity
  • Ignacio Sanchez is inspired by his family’s Oaxacan heritage

We can’t wait to see what fantastical alebrije dreams these artists will bring to life! Their sculptures will be displayed November 5-12, 2023, at the MFAH’s Fall Festival.

This is a wonderful opportunity to showcase and appreciate Latinx artists’ immense talents in Houston. Kudos to ALMAAHH and the MFAH for making this magical event happen.
