Happy Birthday, Cesar Chavez!
Even though my father was a bracero (a migrant farmworker) as a child and young adult… and I think even as an adult… I didn’t learn about Cesar Chavez until I was in college. Yes, it was in a Mexican American Studies class. I learned a lot in that class, and at the top were Cesar Chavez and Dolores Huerta.
For those of you who don’t know who Cesar Chavez was and his lasting impact, I will refer you to the Wikipedia page about him. Honestly, there’s a lot to learn. He was a prominent civil rights activist and historical figure, and let you figure out the rest.
Today, I’m just taking a moment to honor his memory on his birthday and acknowledge that things possibly wouldn’t be the same without him.
Happy birthday, Cesar Chavez! We are grateful for all you did. And we’ll continue the fight.
