The eight brightly colored sculptures were designed and created by Mexican artists and artisans. They are inspired by Mexican magical realism and the animal guardian spirits found in Mesoamerican folklore. Each giant sculpture is based on an original work by a celebrated Oaxacan artist.
Look for fantastic creatures including an armadillo, coyote, rabbit, Catbird, Cat Nahual, LionBull, Happy Alien and a skeletal dog representing the soul’s journey to the underworld. The sculptures are placed throughout Discovery Green, so visitors can discover them as they explore the park.
There are also two free artist workshops for all ages during the exhibition: a papier-mâché mask workshop on September 19 from 2 to 4 PM and a small alebrijes workshop on September 26 from 5 to 7 PM.
The exhibition celebrates Mexican craftsmanship and cultural heritage while highlighting the connections between Houston and México. And because it runs throughout Hispanic Heritage Month, there is plenty of time to visit.
