APERIO makes its premiere performance at the Midtown Arts & Theater Center Houston (MATCH) with Exotic Blooms – Chamber Music from Latin America. Exploring music from Peru, Argentina, Brazil, and Cuba, this program celebrates the coming together of folkloric and classical influences in Latin American music.
Featuring vibrant sonorities, evocative melodies, and a reverence for folk dance, Alberto Ginastera’s Pampeana No. 2 for cello and piano conjures visions of the high plains of Argentina. Similarly, Gabriela Lena Frank’s Sueños de Chambi for flute and piano portrays the celebratory and reverential traditions of Peru’s indigenous cultures. A more cosmopolitan and social atmosphere permeates Astor Piazzolla’s music in his L’Histoire du Tango. Two duo sonatas cast in a more classical vein, but imbued with familiar and accessible popular styles by Radamés Gnattali and Jose Lezcano display the rich combination of regional music with traditions imported from the old world.
