USPS Unveils Piñatas! Stamps to Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month
In a colorful celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month (Sept. 15-Oct. 15), the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) has unveiled its latest stamp collection, the Piñatas! Stamps. These dynamic Forever stamps depict four vibrant designs, two donkeys and two seven-pointed stars inspired by the traditional Mexican piñata.
Piñatas, with their intriguing history, have an enchanting origin story. Scholars trace their roots back to China before they journeyed through Italy and ultimately found their place in Mexican traditions. Today, they symbolize triumph over adversity and play a pivotal role in celebrations in Mexico and the United States. I know that my family has a tradition of breaking out a piñata (no pun intended) every time we have a big family celebration.
The Piñatas! stamps showcase vibrant digital illustrations designed by Víctor Meléndez and guided by stamp designer Antonio Alcalá. The color palette takes inspiration from Mexican culture, reflecting the vibrancy of traditional elements such as townhouses, dresses, toys, and piñatas.
I’ll pick up a sheet of these the next time I go to the post office. These stamps are available in booklets of 20 and always hold the same value as the current First-Class Mail 1-ounce price.
